Registration for the Canada-U.S. Green Card lottery has increased by more than 70 per cent in the past two years, the government says.
In fact, the number of Canadians who applied for citizenship in 2017 rose to almost 1.1 million, an increase of more than 50 per cent from a year earlier.
Immigration officials say the surge in applications is a result of the Trump administration’s tougher immigration enforcement.
“With the Trump Administration, the border is not the same as it was under previous administrations, so we’ve seen an increase in the number, but we’re also seeing an increase for those who applied,” Immigration Minister Chris Alexander told a news conference in Toronto.
“We’re seeing more people applying for citizenship than we’ve ever seen.”
More: In the past year, more than 2.2 million people have applied for the citizenship lottery, a 41 per cent increase over the same time last year.
There are about 3.4 million people who are eligible for citizenship but have not applied, according to the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
This year, the citizenship number will be up to more than 1.9 million, up from about 1.5 million in 2016.
“So I think it’s important to know that we have an incredibly generous process, so people who want to apply can apply as many times as they want.” “
